The game simply included a quick play mode where users could play single games. These games did not include popular athletes that we currently see in games today, as licenses from the NFL and the NFLPA were not available. It was initially named “John Madden Football,” the game introduced customizable weather control, time quarters, fatigue, player injuries, and penalties. The mod does take into account dev traits heavily so if you drafted a guy with superstar trait he's much more likely to have a high potential than a normal dev. Of course this progression might be tough to stomach for some people who want to watch their drafted darlings become superstars and don't want to leave it to chance. I think progressions like that add a lot more of the realism and uncertainty from real NFL into Madden. What if I'm picking 15th and the early 1st QB with draft story is available? Maybe I Josh Rosen DJ at that point. Do I give up on him after one year? Maybe draft a LT (like the Giants did) and give him another year to see if he has some progression and then decide on a new QB? That way if he doesn't work out I have a solid line for my next QB. It adds difficult decisions to my drafting choices. On the flip side, say he only goes up 1 point in mid-season and none in end season. But at my end season progression he gains 15 skill points to become a 80 overall and suddenly he's all set to take a huge leap in year 2. Maybe at my mid-season progression he stays at 65. He's a 65 overall but say the mod assigns him a potential of 90. The cool thing about this is the progressions are random, meaning players could get a bunch of skill points one progression period and nothing the next. Every player is assigned a potential rating, and they reach that within the first 4 years of their career through progressions that you manually trigger with the mod. It should be that he improves to 80-85 overall QB and then has a great season. If I throw 40 TDs with Daniel Jones as a 68 overall QB then he becomes a superstar it doesn't make much sense. It's based on the simple premise that performance follows improvement not the other way around. The 2nd mod I'm using overhauls the progression system. I think if you're looking for realistic gameplay this is essential. Biggest issues are easy interceptions fall through the fingers way too much as the user and average IDL for the defense plays like Aaron Donald sometimes. Barkley doesn't juke out everyone anymore but he'll still break some here and there. I tried forcing one to my slot 72 overall guy over Byron Jones or panicked from a pass rush to throw it straight to a linebacker. I've thrown 20 picks through 9 games but the good thing is all except two felt completely on me. It's completely revitalized madden gameplay for me.

It's only two mods so while it's a bit of effort to set up it's so worth it. With Madden 21 looking like same old same old for Franchise, I'm probably going to stick with Madden 20 modded for Franchise mode.
